Greenspring's New Exercise Class Is Tailored to Residents' Abilities

Residents Pat Dutton and Mike Rudd enjoyed participating in the first Stay Active and Independent for Life classes

Greenspring, an Erickson Senior Living community in Springfield, Va., boasts an impressive fitness center with a range of exercise classes. From cardio dance and cardio boxing to yoga flow, there's something for everyone.

"We're always introducing new classes to keep things fresh and exciting," says Fitness Manager Debbie Enright.

In fact, earlier this year, Greenspring became the first Erickson Senior Living community to introduce a SAIL (Stay Active and Independent for Life) exercise class. SAIL, an evidence-based fall prevention program focused on improving balance, is offered in partnership with Marymount University in Arlington, Va., and the Northern Virginia Falls Prevention Alliance.

"Balance is important as we advance in age," says resident Mike Rudd, who participated in the first SAIL classes. "One of the best things about the class is that it's tailored to the individual, so you are never pushed to do exercises beyond your capacity."

He adds, "It's a great class. The instructors are very well trained and informed!"

Uniquely designed

"Maintaining balance is a key factor in preventing falls," says Enright. "Our 12-week SAIL program focuses on functional balance, which is the ability to move while maintaining balance."

The SAIL classes, held twice a week, also increase strength and overall fitness. All of the exercises--designed with an older population in mind--can be done sitting or standing and incorporate the use of two-pound cuff weights for wrists and ankles, utilized based on ability.

"You can take the class at your own pace," says Mike. "The instructors are cognizant of what each person can do. The whole class is catered to you."

Making modifications

Enright notes that a range of modifications, like holding onto a chair while standing, are welcome.

Prior to beginning the classes, certified instructors lead the participants through a pressure-free comprehensive assessment, including walking around a cone, sit-to-stands, and bicep curls, to better understand each person's abilities.

"Consistent participation in class activities is what makes a difference," says Enright. "We want participants to feel confident in class and get stronger! We recommend modifications based on each person's needs."

A healthy routine

After just a few weeks of classes, Mike began to see an improvement in his balance.

"When I began taking the class, I could only hold my balance for 10 or 15 seconds. Before the class was even complete, I was able to balance myself for up to a couple of minutes!" he says. "It's very encouraging to see the ways in which you are improving."

Resident Pat Dutton also took part in Greenspring's first SAIL classes.

"The classes really jump-started my exercise routine. Up until that time, I had only been sporadically exercising, but I knew I needed more structure," says Pat. "I really liked the commitment that the class requires."

She adds, "For me, the balance aspect was really good. I was also encouraged to work on my strength and endurance--things I wasn't getting anywhere else."

Since completing the SAIL program, Pat has been taking advantage of the fitness center and exercising more frequently. In fact, she signed up for the next group of SAIL classes!

"I'm making this a priority for me," she says. "I'm thankful to have the opportunity to take this wonderful class. I appreciate the hard work and dedication of Debbie and her staff to bring the class to Greenspring."

Additional support

Upon the completion of the program, Enright and her team continue to support participants by recommending other classes or exercise routines that can build upon their progress.

"I asked Debbie for her advice on what classes I should take to help me maintain and continue with what I've accomplished," says Pat. "She helped me pick new classes, and that was so helpful. The staffs fantastic."

Impressive progress

Mike and Pat urge anyone considering the SAIL classes to sign up.

"Go for it!" says Pat. "The instructors make it fun, and the music is good. You can do the exercises at your own pace--whatever you feel comfortable doing. No one ever feels pushed to do more than they want each day."

She continues, "And I've seen for myself the impact the class makes. Some people who started the class sitting were able to stand for some of the exercises near the end of the program. I'm so grateful to be a part of them here at Greenspring."
