Fire Blotter: Hay Fire Extinguished on I-66

Busy night for Centreville firefighters.

Centreville residents who live near route 28 heard a lot of sirens on Wednesday night. Here's why.

On I-66, near route 28, stacks of hay inside of the bed of a pickup truck caught on fire around 7 p.m., then spreading to a trailer extension. Fortunately, no one was hurt, but firefighters spent about an hour on the scene.

There was no indication what started the fire, said Dan Schmidt, a spokesperson for the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department. "There's so many things that could have happened," he said.

Then on Route 28, near Compton Road, there was an unrelated two-vehicle accident, around 7:30 p.m. Centreville Road temporarily closed down as police and firefighters worked to clear the scene. One person was transported to the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries, Schmidt said.
