Grand Jury Indicts Man for Role in Home Invasion Murder

Reynard Prather of Maryland is accused of shooting Jose Cardona, of Manassas Park, who died trying to defend his employer's family.

 

A federal grand jury indicted Reynard Lazaro Prather, 22, Thursday on charges for his alleged role in an attempted armed robbery and at a Centreville mansion in May 2010. 

The grand jury indicted Parther on charges of conspiracy to commit Hobbs Act robbery, use of a firearm in a crime of violence, use of a firearm in a crime of violence causing death and possession of ammunition by a prohibited person. If convicted, Prather, of Oxon Hill, Md., faces a maximum sentence of life in prison or even death, Peter Carr, spokesperson for the U.S. Attorney's Office, said in a press release.

Prather allegedly planned to rob the mansion, along with another co-conspirator, because he thought the the owner had money there from his check-cashing business. He met up with another conspirator, who was not identified, at a Virginia shopping center on May 17, 2010, prosecutors said. A third conspirator dropped off the two at the home, where they waited for the family to return. Prather and his conspirator were allegedly armed with a semi-automatic pistol, prosecutors said. During the invasion, . 

The case has been a long and difficult one. Fairfax County police investigated the case, along with the ATF.  It's unclear right now if that played a role in the arrest. In September, a district judge dismissed charges against Vincent Leon Milhouse.

Prather was previously convicted and sentenced to three years in prison for wearing a handgun in Maryland, according to a court affidavit.
