Tornado In Centreville Confirmed With 85 MPH Winds: NWS

The National Weather Service confirmed a second tornado touched down in Northern Virginia last Thursday when storms moved through the area.

CENTREVILLE, VA — The National Weather Service confirmed a second tornado touched down in Northern Virginia last Thursday when severe storms moved through the region.

The EF-0 tornado touched down in Centreville around 8:21 p.m. on March 31 for about one minute. It had an estimated speed of 85 mph. An EF-0 is the lowest of six tiers on the Enhanced Fujita Scale, which measures tornadic intensity.

No injuries or deaths occurred, but several downed trees were reported in the Batavia Drive area in Centreville as a result of the winds.

The NWS previously confirmed that another EFO tornado touched down in Tysons along Chain Bridge Road northwest of Tysons Corner Center around 8:41 p.m. to 8:42 p.m. on Thursday. Estimated peak winds were 85 mph with a path of a quarter mile. Damage was reported at two gas stations at Chain Bridge Road and International Drive.

Tornadoes are relatively uncommon in the D.C. area. Last July, two tornadoes touched down in the region, according to the NWS. An EF0 tornado hit in D.C., while an EF1 touched down in Arlington.
