Rock & Roll Campers Get Their Chance to Shine

More than 60 of the students in the Contemporary Music Center's Summer Rock Camp will perform at the Hylton Performing Arts Center this weekend.

What does every aspiring rock star dream about? Jamming in front of an audience, of course. 

And on Sunday, Aug. 19, 63 of these local budding musicians—all of whom participated in the 's annual summer rock camp—will head on stage at the in Manassas to show what they can do. 

"We just can't wait for Sunday. Excitement is through the roof right now," said Jerry Hammack, store manager of the Contemporary Music Center, which has a location in Chantilly and another in Haymarket. Performers will come from both sites.

The kids will split into groups between four and seven bands, playing all kinds of songs: classic rock, original music, covers of popular tunes. This is the fifth year the store has held the summer concert, but this is the first time the students have performed at the Hylton. 

"It's the culmination of a couple weeks of practice over the summer. It's at our biggest venue ever," Hammack added.

The event starts at 12 p.m. in the Gregory Family Theatre and goes until 6 p.m., with a "meet and greet" intermission midway. Tickets are $12.50 in advance or $15 the day of the show.
