Officials Say There Are Enough Graves for Every Body in Manassas Cemetery For Now

Manassas City officials don't have to resort to a lottery drawing afterall to determine who will get one of the popular new plots planned for the Manassas Cemetery on Center Street.

 Sixty-two of the 124 plots have been sold in the seven weeks since applications for the grave plots became available on Sept. 4, Manassas City public affairs specialist Patty Prince said.

 Officials were expecting a “really high demand” for the burial plots once it was announced that the sold-out cemetery was expanding and adding grave sites.

A lottery was organized by city staff and the cemetery advisory committee so each applicant would have a fair chance at earning a spot. The drawing was to be held two weeks after the Oct. 4 application closing date, but it was canceled because it isn't needed.  Purchasing is now accepting applications on a first-come first serve basis until all are sold, Prince said. 

The new plots will face East and will be in the southwestern portion of the cemetery, abutting the Harley-Davidson dealership.

Just about half of the plots are still available. 

 The plots are $4,000 each and are about 3.5 feet wide and 10 feet long,

Those selected can purchase up to two burial lots. The city is also taking requests for adjacent lots for people who want to be buried together.

 Once purchased the lots are transferrable with the proper paperwork and the approval of the city.
