Authorities said that Albert Spriggs, of Sterling, was driving a 2009 Chevrolet truck westbound down Braddock Road. For unknown reasons, his truck crossed the median and entered the eastbound lanes of Braddock Road just west of Ox Road.

The truck sideswiped a Chevrolet van heading eastbound on Braddock Road near North Hill Drive. The truck then struck another Chevrolet van head on, police said. The second impact caused the truck to overturn.

Spriggs was pronounced dead on the scene. Three other vehicles traveling eastbound on Braddock were also involved in the crash. A total of five people were taken to local hospitals with non life-threatening injuries.

Speed and alcohol do not appear to be factors in this crash. Crash reconstruction detectives continue to investigate.

Previous Story (July 20)

Motorists can expect major delays due to a multi-vehicle fatal crash on Braddock Road near North Hill Drive.

The accident was reported at 2:27 p.m. on Tuesday. One adult male was killed in the crash and four others were injured, said Fairfax County Police Department spokesman Officer Bud Walker.

Authorities are investigating just how many vehicles were involved in the crash. Braddock Road was shut down in both directions immediately after the accident, but the westbound lane has since been reopened. Eastbound traffic is flowing but is being diverted through a neighborhood, Walker said.

The accident scene stretched from North Hill Drive to Shadow Valley Drive. Two cars looked to have collided closer to North Hill Drive, one of which had spun around. Farther west, another truck's hood was folded around a small tree in the Braddock median strip. Next to it, an overturned crate truck's crushed cab held a cargo van off balance.

Injured motorists were taken to Fairfax Hospital. Their conditions have yet to be released.

Motorists are asked to avoid the area.
