2016 Little Hunting Creak Cleanup Saturday

Cleanup will be staged at three locations; sign up here.

FAIRFAX COUNTY, VA -- Senator Scott Surovell and Delegate Paul Krizek are sponsoring their 2016 Little Hunting Creek Cleanup event Saturday, according to a news release from organizers. Here's more about the cleanup, from the news release:

Little Hunting Creek is one of the most severely degraded streams in Fairfax County. In 2007, it was named “Fairfax County’s Trashiest Stream” by Fairfax County who spent over $50,000 of taxpayer funds removing trash. The area is impacted by substandard stormwater system, a significant retail presence, a large concentration of apartments with trash containment problems, and a large homeless population, which results in significant, litter dispersal throughout the watershed.

All volunteers should RSVP and should sign-up to volunteer and to pick a location (see below) by going to:

Over the last seven years, Senator Surovell, Delegate Krizek, Friends of Little Hunting Creek and their volunteers have removed over 186 shopping carts, over 450 bags of trash, over a dozen bikes, over 50 tires, multiples car seats and one .22 caliber-hunting rifle. Additionally, volunteers helped dispose of one bathtub, one bounce house, one lawn chair, and numerous liquor and beer cans. An extensive cleanup such as this would not be possible without the help of the Mount Vernon community who took time from their schedules to help improve the local environment.

This year, volunteers will spend the entire day removing trash, litter, and debris from three sites in the uppermost watershed of the creek where it originates in Hybla Valley including portions never previously addressed. Pizza and water will be provided to all volunteers.

There are many reasons to volunteer:

  • Gain high school and middle school community service hours
  • Gain education about local ecosystem shortcomings and impairments
  • Raise community awareness of volunteerism and environmental protection with children
  • Make your community a better place
