FHYAA Team Finishes Basketball Season Undefeated

The Gold Hawkeyes pulled off a final win Monday night.

Thanks to a few last-minute shots, a group of ten to 11 year-old boys on a Fort Hunt Youth Athletic Association Basketball Team managed to pull off an undefeated season, Monday night.

In a neck-in-neck game, the Hawkeyes defeated the Boilermakers, with a final score of 31 points to 28 points.  The Hawkeyes had already entered the double-elimination round with 10 regular season wins under their belt.

By the beginning of the second half the Boilermakers had pulled ahead of the Hawkeyes 22 points to 19, but the Hawkeyes wouldn’t let them keep the lead for long, as the team was able to squeeze out four more points.

Both teams entered the last quarter tied at 24 points and the following moments were filled with timeouts, fouls and last-minute attempts to score, leaving fans to wonder just who would take home the championship title.

With 30 seconds on the clock, the Boilermakers had managed to pull off a narrow one-point lead, but just a few seconds later the Hawkeyes scored two points on a foul shot, giving the team the lead. A last-second shot, almost from the half, gave the Hawkeyes a final score of 31 points to 28.

Despite the narrow loss, Boilermakers coach and league commissioner Jim Wozniak said his team put up a good fight.

“I think we gave them a scare.  I think we made them play a 4th quarter,” he said. “I thought it was a really good game."

Hawkeyes coach Jennifer Gale said she thinks close team dynamics contributed to their success.

“They are a very tight team,” she said. “They have actually made friends with each other.”

Gale hopes the boys will take to heart lessons about sportsmanship as they continue to grow as athletes.

“We play with our minds, not our bodies,” Gale said to the kids as she handed them a second trophy.  “You guys are a great team.”
