The Fairfax County Fire and Rescue department responded to the report of a gas leak at 8428 Fort Hunt Road, the location of Carl Sandburg Middle School.
According to an alert sent out by the department, a gas line was struck, causing a large gas leak.
Battalion Chief Rodney Colbert said when firefighters arrived around 1:30 p.m., there was a strong smell in the area. HAZMAT is at the scene of the incident and is working to excavate the gas line.
Major construction is currently taking place at the middle school. An ambulance was also present along with multiple fire and rescue units. However, no injuries have been reported.
Travel along Fort Hunt Road has not been affected by the incident.
