National Park Service Assumes Operational Management of Fort Washington

The transition will begin on Nov.12, 2016.

The National Park Service will assume operational management of the Fort Washington Marina in Piscataway Park on Nov. 12. The National Park Service has worked to ensure a smooth and safe transition by conducting site inspections, evaluating facilities, and working with on-site business to ensure that visitor services continue without interruption.

The National Park Service appreciates the recreational value provided by Fort Washington Marina and looks forward to working with businesses, slip holders and community members to ensure that Fort Washington Marina continues to provide great visitor experiences. While all previously operating businesses were provided the opportunity to continue under concession contracts with the National Park Service, Rye's Fiberglass Fabrication chose to close. Companies who wish to offer mobile repair services may apply for a commercial use authorization (CUA) permit to operate at the marina.

Fort Washington Marina has been managed by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources since 1986 through a cooperative agreement with the National Park Service. In October 2015, the Maryland Department of Natural Resources notified the National Park Service of its desire to return responsibility for Fort Washington Marina to the National Park Service at the end of this 30 year agreement, which expired Oct. 4, 2016. Maryland Department of Natural Resources extended operational oversight through Nov. 11 while Coastal Properties Management, Inc. secured insurance required to operate a marina on federal land. Maryland Department of Natural Resources has been a tremendous partner and should be recognized for its 30 years of service in managing the Fort Washington Marina.

Fort Washington Marina is situated on National Park Service land within Piscataway Park. The park helps preserve the Mt. Vernon view shed, and its location on Piscataway Creek provides access to the Potomac River. The marina consists of a single boat launch ramp and five floating docks with 200 boat slips, a fuel dock, two pump-out stations and other visitor amenities.
