Public Meeting to Discuss Route 1 Transportation Study Set for Wednesday
Officials will discuss the multimodal transportation analysis at the South County Government Center.
The first community meeting to discuss the Route 1 multimodal transportation study is scheduled for 6 p.m. Wednesday. The meeting will be held at the South County Government Center located at 8350 Richmond Hwy.
The Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation (VDRPT) is managing the "Multimodal Transportation Alternatives Analysis" that started in May. AECOM is conducting the study that will analyze transportation along Richmond Highway and host multiple public meetings with stakeholders to determine the best improvement recommendations for Route 1.
According to the Southeast Fairfax Development Corporation(SFDC), different modes of transportation that may be considered include bus rapid transit (BRT), light rail transit (LRT), extended metrorail services, roadway widening and restructured pedestrian and bicycle pathways.
During the pubic meeting, residents and stakeholders will have the opportunity to receive an update on the analysis, ask questions and provide any input on possible transportation improvements for the major highway.
Local officials have previously voiced their opinions on how Route 1 transportation should be improved. Previously, Lee District Supervisor Jeff McKay said the improvements are "20 years overdue." Del. Scott Surovell (D-44th) said he is in favor of extending the Yellow Line from the Huntington Metro Station.
Mount Vernon District Supervisor Gerry Hyland agrees that some form of rail will help with transportation issues along Route 1 — whether it be light rail transit (LRT) or extending metro.
