River Towers Condo Collapse: Assistance Available to Anyone Displaced

Supervisor Storck: "For many of the residents still displaced, this will be a continuing personal, emotional and financial hardship..."

FAIRFAX COUNTY, VA -- Thirty-two units were evacuated and many residents displaced after the River Towers condominium partial collapse Oct. 2, Supervisor Storck noted in his Mount Vernon Advisor newsletter sent out Thursday. Here's more from Storck about the collapse:

"The 6131 building partially collapsed because support beams rusted and buckled. As a result, 32 units were evacuated and many residents were displaced while damages are being assessed and repairs being made. Fortunately, no one was injured.

Thanks for the tremendous support of Fairfax County's Office of Emergency Management, Police Department, Fire Department, the County Building Division, Department of Code Compliance, Department of Neighborhood and Community Services, the Red Cross, the County Executive's Office and many members of our office. Everyone in the County pulled together for the benefit of community.

For many of the residents still displaced, this will be a continuing personal, emotional and financial hardship because it will still be some time before they can return to their units. If you are a displaced resident in need of food, clothing or housing assistance, please call Fairfax County Neighborhood and Community Services at 703-222-0880 or, of course, you are welcome to call us. We will continue to provide support in the coming weeks as the damage repair work and restoration efforts continue."
