Alexandria and much of Fairfax County are under a severe thunderstorm watch through 10 p.m. Monday, according to the National Weather Service. "Thunderstorms will be capable of producing damaging wind gusts and large hail," NWS says.

“The atmosphere is juiced and storms are organizing to the west, setting the stage for a round of afternoon and evening thunderstorms, a few of which may be severe,” according to the Capital Weather Gang.

Already, some areas north and west (toward Leesburg) have switched from severe thunderstorm watches to warnings. A watch means conditions are ripe for severe thunderstorms; a warning means severe thunderstorms are imminent.
