Here are the top five stories in Lorton today:
- Kenithy Manns, 32, of Lorton, was fatally shot on Sunday night in Washington, D.C. Police responded to the 1200 block of H Street NE and found Manns suffering from a gunshot wound where he was eventually pronounced dead. The Metropolitan Police Department is investigating the shooting and offering an award of up to $25,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of person(s) responsible. (Lorton Patch)
- Fairfax County Executive Bryan Hill has proposed a flat tax rate for real estate taxes of 7 percent for 2024. Increasing real estate tax assessments will still likely result in higher taxes for homeowners. A public hearing on the proposed budget is scheduled for Apr. 11 and Apr. 13, and the county's Board of Supervisors is expected to make changes before the final budget is approved on May 9. (ABC 7 News)
- The Fairfax County Police Department will add 25 automated license plate readers around the county in high-crime areas. After a successful eight-week trial period, which led to over 60 arrest charges, the department said the trial period will take place for another 10 months. Sergeant Hudson Bull said, "The camera placement is based on data showing where most stolen vehicles are recovered and where most crime occurs that we believe these cameras could assist us in solving."
