The <a href="http://www.vre.org/about/opsbd.htm" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Virginia Railway Express Operations Board</a> has approved a proposal to solicit bids for the construction of a 250-foot platform extension at the <a href="http://www.vre.org/service/stations/LOR.htm" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Lorton VRE Station. </a> The $5.6 million project is funded by a state grant, a matching grant from <a href="http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Fairfax County</a> and a grant from the Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality Improvement (CMAQ) program. The addition will join another project at the station - the multi-million dollar second platform. "The design has been underway and is now substantially complete and in the permitting process with Fairfax County, with no anticipated issues," according to a <a href="http://www.vre.org/about/Ops_board_items/2013/February/Action_Item_8A_Consent_IFB_Lorton.pdf" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">VRE staff report</a>.  The existing 400-foot platform was built in 1992 and can only accommodate five car train sets. The expansion will accommodate eight car train sets.
