Malfunctioning Dishwasher Sparks Blaze at Lorton Home

Department says fire caused nearly $100,000 damage and displace resident Sunday in Lorton.

LORTON, VA -- Fairfax County Fire and Rescue say a malfunctioning dishwasher caused nearly $100,000 damage to a Lorton home Sunday.

Firefighters responded to the house fire Sunday, April 10, at approximately 11:25 a.m., in the Lorton area of Fairfax County. The single-family home is located at in the 8500 block of Blackfoot Court.

When they arrived, firefighters found smoke coming from the front of the house. Firefighters conducted an aggressive fire attack and quickly extinguished the fire. There were no firefighter or civilian injuries reported.

The home had working smoke alarms, the fire department said. The fire was discovered when an occupant of the house returned home, according to Fairfax County Fire and Rescue.

One adult was displaced and Red Cross support is being provided. Damage is estimated at approximately $93,750.

According to fire investigators, the fire was accidental. The cause of the fire was determined to be a malfunctioning dishwasher that was operating at the time of the fire.
