Much Ado about Disco?

South County Theatre's Take on This Shakespeare Classic Will Make You Want to Boogie

Lorton, VA (November 8, 2023) - The South County High School (SCHS) Theatre Department is renowned for its annual main stage productions, offering students the chance to hone their theatrical talents under unique themes. In previous years, themes of “camaraderie and hope” led to memorable performances of Puffs and Mamma Mia, while the theme "slay your own monsters" inspired captivating renditions of She Kills Monsters and The Lightning Thief.

This year, the SCHS Theatre is set to "embrace the classics" by presenting both a Shakespearean play and a 1950s musical. However, don't expect the ordinary, as South County productions always come with a delightful twist. For the fall play, they will transport William Shakespeare's comedy, Much Ado About Nothing, to a 1970s discotheque! Running from November 16th to 18th, this show promises numerous creative opportunities for theatre students.

This production will be a visual and auditory feast of the 1970s disco era, with dazzling costumes and vibrant set designs. Adding to the excitement, the actors will deliver Shakespearean lines in a relatable and understandable manner. Molly Rumberger, SCHS's theatre teacher and a Helen Hayes Award Winner, is leading the technical design aspects. She has enlisted the expertise of Bess Kaye to direct the show, who has an MFA in Classical Acting and membership in the Society of American Fight Directors. Her previous collaboration with South County involved coordinating fight scenes for She Kills Monsters which last year’s students loved. That, coupled with her passion for making Shakespeare accessible to a wide audience, makes her a great choice for director of this production.

"I've truly relished witnessing the students develop a deep appreciation for Shakespeare," said Kaye. "Much Ado is the perfect fit for high school, with its misdirection, misunderstandings, and lover's quarrels – the students are thoroughly enjoying it!"

While Rumberger usually takes the director's chair for main stage shows, she is channeling her focus towards the intricate technical aspects this time. "I can't wait for audiences to witness the 70s disco stage extravaganza, complete with stunning costumes, dynamic lighting effects, and fantastic props. Collaborating with the students to blend these two worlds has been an absolute joy," Rumberger shared.

Much Ado About Nothing is a tale of love interwoven with misdirection, chaos, and literal masks. While Hero and Claudio encounter romantic struggles due to deceit, tricks are used to bring Benedict and Beatrice together. Performances will be held at 7 pm on November 16th, 17th, and 18th, with a Saturday matinee at 2 pm. We invite you to "Do the Hustle” over to South County and groove along with this unforgettable show!
