LORTON, VA — A Springfield man died Saturday when his motorcycle collided with a car that was attempting to make a U-turn at an intersection in Lorton late Saturday afternoon, according to the Fairfax County Police Department.

The 22-year-old motorcycle driver, Carrington Fitzgerald, was traveling southbound on Richmond Highway shortly after 5 p.m. on Saturday when the crash occurred, police said. The driver of a Honda Accord was stopped in the left turn lane at Birch Crest Way, attempting to make a U-turn to go southbound on Richmond Highway.

When the driver of the car was making the U-turn, Fitzgerald’s motorcycle collided with the car, and he was thrown from his motorcycle, according to police.

"He loved cars, motorcycles, and spending time with his friends and family. He lived up to his name in every way as he made his way through life caring for and helping those he came across in one way or another," the GoFundMe campaign reads.

"His family, friends, and all who knew him are in a period of shock, mourning, and devastation given his abrupt and unexpected departure. Carrington is loved by many and will be missed by all," the fundraising site says.

Fairfax County police said its detectives do not believe alcohol was a factor in the crash, but are continuing to investigate to determine if speed was a factor.
