Summer's Last Weekend on Mason Neck - Part 2 - Mason Neck State Park

What you would have seen had you visited Mason Neck...

The Mason Neck section of Lorton -- with Mason Neck State Park and Elizabeth Hartwell National Wildlife Reserve (to name just two destinations) is truly a natural wonderland. It's a world-class bird-watching area and has just enough trails to get one gleefully lost on a weekend afternoon. Yesterday, the last Saturday of summer, with its cloudless sky, was a perfect day to turn a few hours over to the exploration of nature.

The leaves are starting to fall, and the ones of newer vintage are a welcome addition to the ones that have been on the trails for several years now, having become as much a part of the paths as the dirt and tree roots. It makes for comfortable walking, allowing a pedestrian to take stock of the area's many other sights.
