Workhouse Artist Lynn Goldstein Commemorates Holocaust

Workhouse Arts Center artist Lynn Goldstein is commemorating the Holocaust with burned pages, bullet holes and pastels. Two of Goldstein's pieces will be featured from Feb. 12- April 15, at this year's Jewish Community Center of Northern Virginia’s annual "Resistance Through Art Exhibition" in Fairfax. 

In one piece, Goldstein has taken a dozen books apart (written in Polish, German, Italian, Rusian, French and Yiddish) and shot them with a handgun, burned and then discolored them with charcoal and pastels.

"People who look at the books will have pastel and charcoal come off on their hands," she said. "And that's by design. Events like the Holocaust, even though they may not have happened to us - we take them with us."

The exhibition will end in April, which is National Holocaust Remembrance Month. 

Goldstein's second piece, "Veiled in Uncertainty", is a pastel drawing of a forest. 
"So many Jews eluded capture and lived in the forest to protect themselves," she said. "It must have been terrifying."
