Workhouse Exhibit Will Have You Seeing Red

Building 5 takes a color and runs with it

The artists in Building 5 of the believe that collaboration brings out the best of them as individuals. The latest example of their penchant for partnerships is the exhibition Red, which opened earlier this month and continues through March 6.

According to Eileen Olson, who is one of the 15 artists taking part in the exhibition, Red is the third building-wide collaboration. The first exhibition was themed All About Me, which self-portraits of the artists. The second came last year at this time, and was dedicated to raising funds for victims of the earthquake in Haiti. That exhibition was aptly titled All About Them.

Olson said the Red theme was the perfect choice for February, with Valentine’s Day anchoring the middle of the month. The Red exhibition will be simultaneous to other , but the artists’ interpretation of the color won’t be limited to its representation of love. Nor will it be limited to medium as depictions will be painted, photographed and in porcelain.

“Red can mean so many different things, “ Olson said. “Heat, passion, anger and, of course, love. It’s a tremendous source of ideas.”

It’s also a great excuse to collaborate. Olson is especially fond of that aspect. “The exchange of ideas. The camaraderie has been wonderful. It’s one of the best things about being at Workhouse.”

Visitors to Red can not only appreciate the artwork, but enter a raffle to win some of it, as over $1,000 worth has been donated by the artists.
