1 Person Killed, 1 Person Injured In Gainesville Collision

The deadly accident happened on Labor Day. A second person sustained life-threatening injuries and remains hospitalized, police said.

MANASSAS, VA—The Prince William County Police Department has identified the driver of pickup truck killed in a fatal collision in Gainesville on Labor Day.

On Monday shortly before 10 p.m., investigators with the crash investigation unit responded to the area of James Madison Highway and Lee Highway in Gainesville to investigate a crash.

According to police, Kelly Wayne Smith, 73, of Mineral was driving a 1989 Chevrolet 1500 pickup truck southbound on Lee Highway as a 45-year-old woman from Haymarket traveled eastbound on James Madison Hwy in a 2018 Hyundai Elantra.

Police said both vehicles eventually collided as the driver of the Elantra attempted a left turn onto Lee Highway, crossing paths with Smith, the driver of the Chevrolet.

Both drivers were transported to area hospitals where Smith died as a result of his injuries sustained during the collision, police said.

The driver of the Elantra sustained life-threatening injuries and remains hospitalized.

Investigators said they are currently working to determine which vehicle had the right-of-way at the time of the collision.

Investigators said they are looking to speak with anyone who may have witnessed the crash. The accident remains under investigation.
