Cougar Boys Soccer Team Wins Region B Championship

Cougars defeated the George Mason High School Mustangs in a Friday night match in Falls Church.

The Manassas Park High School boys soccer team is set to host a state quarterfinal match Tuesday after winning the 2011 Region B Boys Soccer Championship Friday in a match against against George Mason High School.

The Manassas Park Cougars won 2-1 over the Mustangs who were the defending regional and state champions, Manassas Park Athletics Director Michael Peters said Saturday.

It is not immediately clear who the Cougars will play on Tuesday night, but it will most likely be Nandua High School out of Onley, Va. or  Northampton High School of Eastville, Va who face each other in the Region A Championship match up, Peters said.

The loser of that Region A championship will play against the Cougars, he said.

The  Manassas Park High boys soccer team now has a record of 18-2-1 on the season.

 The Cougars have a maximum of three games remaining in their season, Peters said.

If the team wins Tuesday night, they will travel to Radford University to play in Friday’s state semifinal game.  The winners of the state semifinals will face each other in the 2011 state championship  Saturday at Radford University. 

At this point, the matches are sudden death; so any teams that lose are eliminated from further play.
