Cougar Varsity Cheer Squad Heads to State Championships

The Manassas Park High Varsity Cheerleading squad will compete at the state level after coming in third place at the Region B competition Saturday, head coach Alicia Sowers said.

Two cougar cheerleaders—Austin McGowan and Jessica Evans— were named to the First Team All Region B while fellow team mate Alexis Nunziata
was named to the Second Team All Region B.

The state compeition will be held at the Virginia Commonwealth University's Siegel Center in Richmond on Saturday.

Some 13 teams are expected to compete in the Single A division match.

The team made it to the state level last year and placed sixth, Sowers said.  This will be the fifth appearance at States since 2003 when Sowers began coaching.

 Evans, Nunziata and Victoria Dumas were named to the First Team All District.

McGowan was also named to the First Team, in addition to being named cheerleader of the year.
