Manassas ReStore Celebrates World Habitat Day This Week

Habitat for Humanity of Prince William County, Manassas and Manassas Park celebrate building homes for people in need.

Habitiat for Humanity volunteers who work to bring adequate shelter to locals and others are celebrating their efforts this week in honor of World Habitat Day.

World Habitat Day, which is today, is a creation of the United Nations and is purposed to bring attention to the dire need for adequate housing in all areas of the globe.

Events to celebrate the cause are being held as far away as Maai Mahiu, Kenya, where the 500,000th Habitat for Humanity House was dedicated today.

At the local level, the Prince William County, Manassas and Manassas Park  Habitat for Humanity affiliate is raising funds this week—funds that will benefit those in the Manassas-area as well as abroad, through Habitat for Humanity International.

The Houses and Hammers campaign, a $1,500 challenge grant from members of Habitat for Humanity’s Board of Directors, is being used to leverage community donations.

The local affiliate is hoping to raise $3,000 for the cause, according to a Habitiat for Humanity press release.  Some 90 percent  of the funds raised will be used for a home ownership or home repair project in the community, while 10 percent will be used for disaster relief in another country.

“Hammers” are available at the Habitat ReStore at 9506 Center St. in Manassas for a recommended donation of one dollar.

To continue the celebration of World Habitat Day, the ReStore is also open to self-guided HabiTours today and tomorrow for those curious about what the store has to offer and what it's all about.

On Wednesday, a Family Selection Orientation for home ownership is planned.

Additional discounts on ReStore merchandise are available all this week in Manassas.

Members of the Virginia Land Title Association (VLTA) are volunteering Thursday to replace the roof on a Manassas home.  A group of U.S. Marines are helping with the project on Saturday, but there are still openings for volunteers to help with the project on Friday.

All of the local events give members of the community the opportunity to learn more about Habitat for Humanity programs and make safe, simple, decent housing for all people a matter of conscience and action, Habitat Volunteers said this week.

The Prince William County, Manassas and Manassas Park Habitat affiliate has built, rehabbed and repaired 75 homes  and helped some 208 people since its founding in 1994.
