MPHS Girls, Boys Track Teams Both Win State Championships

Boys earned their first state championship, while the girls clinched second championship in a row.

The Boys Track team earned its first state team title in  history at a meet Saturday at Radford University.

The boys team won the 2011 Virginia Group A State Chamipionship after defeating Radford High School with a score of 51-50, Manassas Park athletics director Michael Peters said Saturday.

Cougar senior Baha’a Bassil won the 800-meter race with a time of 1:58, making him the only individual state champion.

  Manassas Park High senior Tyree Durr, finished as state runner-up  in the 300-meter hurdles and also placed in the 110-meter hurdles, high jump and triple jump, Peters said.  

Fellow senior Bobby Jackson was the state runner up in the shot put with a throw of 50 feet and 3 inches.  The Cougar 4-by-400 meter relay team placed third in the state.

While the boys were making their own history, the Manassas Park High School Girls Track team was busy securing a second consecutive state championship.

The lady Cougars beat James River High School of Buchanan, Va., Peters said.

  Ten of the 12 Cougar girls who attended the meet placed and scored, he said.   Lady Cougar junior Wileta Tibbs  became the only individual champion when she won the discus with a throw of 120 feet and  6 inches.

Cougar senior Sharese Roberts was the state runner up in both the 200-meter  and 400-meter races. She also finished third in the 100-meter dash. 

Manassas Park High 10th grader Victoria Dumas placed third in the 30o-meter hurdles, Peters said.
