2 Virginia Boaters Missing After Bad Weather In Atlantic: Coast Guard

HAMPTON, VA — The U.S. Coast Guard is searching for a Virginia man and woman who have not returned after their boat was damaged in bad weather, according to authorities.

Yanni Nikopoulos and Dale Jones, both 65 and Virginia Beach natives, set sail from Hampton, Virginia, on June 8 and were headed to the Azores, Portugal. Jones' daughter told authorities they called her June 13 and told her they were returning to Hampton after "heavy weather" damaged their boat, according to the Coast Guard.

The boaters were around 460 miles off the Virginia Beach coast when they planned to turn around, and the daughter has not heard from them since.

Jones' daughter first contacted the Coast Guard on Friday, indicating she hadn't heard from them and that they were expected to return by Monday.

Jones and Nikopoulos are married, according to Jones' Facebook profile.

Air crews conducted search flights Monday and Tuesday near the area they were last heard from, but no evidence was found, according to authorities.
