Norfolk Southern Hosts First Responder Training in Norfolk, VA
First responders receive hands-on training aboard the NS Safety Train during Norfolk Southern's Operation Awareness & Response (OAR) program
This week, Norfolk Southern's Safety Train stopped in Norfolk, VA to provide emergency responders with free training on hazardous materials transportation and railroad operations as part of the railroad's Operation Awareness & Response (OAR) program.
“99.9% of all hazardous materials get to destination safely. But in that rare event, we want our communities to be prepared,” said Norfolk Southern Hazardous Materials Regional Manager Paul Williams.
To maximize the effectiveness of instruction, the train is outfitted with boxcar classrooms, tank cars and a locomotive for hands-on learning for local fire departments and other local agencies. Norfolk Southern takes extensive measures to ensure the safe transport of hazardous materials and this program helps communities prepare for and respond to an unlikely railroad incident.
