Fairfax Police Youth Club Captures Rugby Virginia High School Girls Championship

On June 2, the FPYC Lady Jaguars overwhelmed the Ft. Hunt Gators 62-5 to win the 2012 Rugby Virginia High School Girls State Championship. It is their third consecutive state title.

The match was played at Fairfax High School Stadium before an enthusiastic crowd. Ft. Hunt kicked off and quickly took advantage to drive the ball to FPYC’s goal line, but the defense finally stiffened. After regaining possession, FPYC counterattacked back to Ft. Hunt’s half.  FPYC’s prop, Bridget Kahele burst through from 10 meters out and scored the first try of the game (5 pts).

Shortly after the ensuing kickoff, FPYC’s fullback, Emily Fulbrook broke free for the first of her three long tries. Flyhalf Green also scored twice in the first half, including a remarkable run from midfield through the heart of the defense. Ft. Hunt showed they were serious with a try of their own, following strong forwards play. Ft Hunt prop Lane Blackwood was able to drive through the last of the FPYC defense to score an unconverted try. The halftime score was 31-5.

In the second half, the Lady Jags were able to pick up where they left off, with Green scoring her third try of the contest.  FPYC’s other prop Matina Sandara broke through and dashed for two scores.  The scoring was completed by match MVP, Thai. 

Fulbrook ended the day with 17 pts, Green with 15, Sandara and Bresson each with 10, Thai, and Kahele with 5 each.

After the match, Kurt Mockenhaupt, President of the Board of Directors of Rugby Virginia, thanked FPYC and FHS for hosting the Girls State High School Championship and complimented them on their outstanding record. He noted the growth of girls’ high school rugby in the Commonwealth and the spirit and sportsmanship displayed by both teams. 

In addition to the team awards to the champions, FPYC, and runners up, Fort Hunt, Jenny Thai, scrumhalf and playmaker from FPYC was named Championship Woman of the Match (MVP).  

FPYC Rugby was created in 2006.  Rugby is also played in the summer for the following age groups: tag coed u-7, u-9, and u-11.  Tackle boys u-13, u-15, and u-17.
