Baseball: Huskies Shut Out Mighty Hoppers

In six innings of work, Tommy Doyle does not give up a hit

With an injury-laden roster, the Flint Hill Huskies found a way to piece together six runs in its shutout victory over Georgetown Day School on Monday.

The Huskies first put runs on the board in the third inning when senior Harrison Gray hit an RBI double, scoring Felix van der Vaart who reached base on a walk. The Huskies continued their two-out rally with an RBI double from senior Rick Armstrong and an RBI single from junior Kevin Abt to put the Huskies up 3-0.

In the bottom of the fourth, van der Vaart hit a sacrifice fly to score Jordan Davis for a score of 4-0.

But with a four-run advantage over the Mighty Hoppers, the Huskies still wanted to expand their lead.

"Me personally, I was frustrated. I wanted to hit all day on them, not saying anything bad about them. I just mean I think we could've hit better, our approach wasn't there," said Gray, who hit two doubles, drove in two runs and scored a run himself. "I mean, we were still looking for more runs. We wanted a comfortable lead."

Scoring continued in the sixth inning when Christian Tailor started a two-out rally with a double to left field, scoring van der Vaart. Gray followed Tailor with an RBI double of his own to post the final run of the game.

"We've been facing adversity this week and throughout the season, too, but we've been trained tough. In the winter we worked out hard, and that really translated onto the field," Gray said. "When it comes to getting a clutch hit with two outs, it's easy. That's the way coach prepares us."

Tommy Doyle struck out eight, walked four and gave up no hits in six innings. Rick Armstrong closed with one strikeout, one walkout and two hits.

With the entire roster upended because of injuries, the Huskies are still searching for the right formula to put together a win streak. But Gray is hopeful.

"People are stepping up. Our seniors are pushing us," he said. "Obviously you could see it as a problem, but I just see it as an opportunity for other kids to step up."

The Huskies will face St. Andrews at 4:30 p.m. today.
