Boys Lacrosse: Saints Overwhelm Huskies 11-4

No. 8 Flint Hill loses to No. 1 team in VISAA

Heading into their matchup against the No. 1 team in the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association, the No. 8 Flint Hill boys lacrosse team knew they had play their best.

Unfortunately, little mistakes throughout the game cost the Huskies on Friday, as they fell 11-4 to the St. Stephens/St. Agnes Saints.

"We tried to do a couple things defensively and we just didn't always execute them," Coach Adam Rice said. "They're just that good that if you make one mistake, they make you pay for it."

The Saints dominated from the start, scoring three goals in the first four minutes of the game. Though the Huskies defense then held the Saints scoreless for about seven minutes, opening up the opportunity for Matt Montagne and Nick Peterson to net one goal each, the Saints ended the first quarter with a goal with less than a second left on the clock.

The Huskies did not score in the second quarter while the Saints added three goals to end the first half with a 7-2 advantage.

The Saints went on a 4-0 scoring spree for the first 10 minutes of the third quarter. Montagne and Peterson added a goal each within the last two minutes of the quarter. Neither team scored in the fourth, leaving the final score at 11-4.

"I felt if we played our best we could really keep it close, and stay within reach," Rice said. "And if it was close, you get to the fourth quarter and you never know what can happen. We played well, we played hard, but we didn't play our best game of the year, and that's what it's going to take to beat them."

Montagne, a senior and three-year varsity starter, said the outcome of Friday's game has no effect on : win the MAC title and qualify for the VISAA tournament.

"Everyone on this team, we all like each other, we're all good friends. So we'll stick together," he said. "We just have to keep doing what we're doing and hopefully we'll make it into the state tournament and win the MAC."

The Huskies will have three away games next week, starting with their matchup against Middleburg Academy at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday. They will also face Georgetown Day School and St. Albans on Wednesday and Friday, respectively.
