Oakton Softball Continues to Develop Young Team
Coach Ray Gordon hopes strong pitching, senior leadership leads Cougars to postseason success
After reaching the second round of the Northern Region tournament and retaining most of the starting lineup, the Oakton High softball team has high expectations for 2012.
"I expect us to compete to win the region," Coach Ray Gordon said. "We have to play good, but I think we're as good as anyone in the region."
Much of the Cougars' success last season revolved around the health of pitching standout Allison Davis, now a sophomore who pitches at about 65 mph. But with more experience under their belts, the squad has become tougher up and down the lineup both on offense and defense.

"Of course, a lot hinges on Allison. The pitcher is the most important position and she's one of the best around," Gordon said. "Our number two pitcher Kayla Sweeney and our number three [Alana Peters] are looking great, so we have three pitchers ready."
Gordon said one of the Cougars' biggest strengths is their senior talent and leadership. Three seniors in particular anchor the team: centerfielder Emily Corridon, first baseman Hayley French and catcher Mandy Krage — co-captains who have played varsity since their freshman year. Senior Angie Noviello began to break out toward the end of last season, which Gordon is hopeful will continue through this year.

Corridon, named to the All-Concorde District first team last season, is central to the team's success, Gordon said.
"She's everything to our team. She makes us tick," said Gordon, who worried how her absence because of illness would affect the team's success against Wakefield on Wednesday.
Despite Corridon's absence, the Cougars pulled out an 8-1 victory to start the season with a winning record. Sophomore Marleigh Hall, who made her varsity starting debut, knocked out a solo home run in the effort. Davis struck out 17.
The Cougars will travel to Washington-Lee on March 26 for a 6 p.m. game. After a nondistrict game against Broad Run, the Cougars will begin Concorde District play on April 10 when they travel to Herndon.
The Cougars will look to clean up their 9-9-1 regular season record from 2011 to a more consistent winning record.
"I believe we have the talent to stay competitive and go far, I really do," Gordon said.
