Vienna All Stars Notch Win in Tourney's First Round

In a tournament that has three teams vying for two spots in the Virginia Babe Ruth League tournament, the Senior League (ages 16-18) Vienna All Stars have advanced to the winners' bracket with a 5-2 win over the Springfield All Stars on Friday.

The Vienna All Stars opened the scoring in the first inning on an RBI groundout from Danny Zdancewicz to score Andrew Di Francisco. 

Vienna added two more runs in the second inning on a two-out rally that started with single to left field from Nick Brunori, who then stole second base. Danny Delgado singled to put runners on first and third, then Patrick Eason scored Brunori with a single of his own. Di Francisco followed with an RBI single to score Delgado, putting Vienna up 3-0 in the top of the second inning.

Vienna then added two more runs in the fourth, scoring on an RBI groundout from Di Francisco and a passed ball.

Starting pitcher Jeff Cazenas kept Springfield scoreless through five innings of work. Cazenas struck out eight and gave up one hit. Bobby Wetherington and Josh Williams pitched in relief.

Springfield added one run in each the sixth and seventh innings.

Vienna will face Greater Fairfax at 11 a.m. at Waters Field. The loser will play Springfield at 1:30 p.m. The winner will advance to the championship game scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Waters Field.
