Drunk Passenger Steals Keys from Uber Driver: Police

VIENNA, VA -- The following summary contains various incidents of general interest as well as vehicular crashes handled by the Town of Vienna, Virginia Police Department from March 18, 2016 – March 24, 2016. Readers are reminded that an “arrest” is based upon probable cause and does not always mean that someone was physically taken into custody. Furthermore, it does not mean that an individual is automatically guilty of a crime. Judicial outcomes and post-arrest proceedings can be researched through the appropriate court’s website. (VIENNA POLICE HIGHLIGHTS is not meant to be a listing of every incident or call handled by the Vienna Police, but merely a more substantive summary of several incidents, which may be of interest to the community. - Arrest – Drunk in Public 16-002227: 900 Block Park Street, SE March 19 11:55 p.m. An Uber driver reported one of his fare’s had taken the keys to his vehicle as they were driving down Park Street, and the man was refusing to give them back to him. The driver immediately stopped the vehicle and called the police. Ofc. Reedy located the man and found him to be intoxicated. He arrested the 57 year old man from Shepherdson Lane, SE in Vienna for Drunk In Public. He was transported to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center where he was to be held until he was sober.
- Destruction of Property 16-002157 1000 Block Moorefield Creek Road, SW Between March 1 at 3:00 p.m. and March 18 at 3:11 p.m. A resident reported damage to the driver’s side rear door of his minivan.
- Animal Case – Quarantine 16-001955 400 Block Adahi Rd., SE March 11 12:00 p.m. ACO Barker received information from the Fairfax County Health Department that a resident had been bitten by a gray pit bull while she was walking in the area. The resident did not know who owned the dog. ACO Barker advised the resident the importance of locating the dog for quarantine to determine the health of the animal and see if there was any potential exposure to her. ACO Barker will continue to investigate this case.
- Animal Case – Quarantine 16-002155 700 Block Upham Place, NW March 13 12:00 p.m. A resident was bitten on both of his hands by his cat as he tried to prevent the animal from leaving the house. ACO Barker advised the resident of the quarantine procedure for the cat.
- Animal Case – Quarantine 16-002055 The Hope Center 140 Park Street, SE March 13 8:00 p.m. An employee reported he had been bitten on the finger by a dog while attempting to perform a medical procedure. The Hope Center requested ACO Barker transport the dog to the Health Department for rabies testing.
- Vandalism 16-002164 1000 Park Street, SE March 16 between 12:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. A resident reported someone vandalized the front door to her house with red spray paint.
- Animal Case – Quarantine 16-002267 The Hope Center 140 Park Street, SE March 17 3:00 p.m. An employee reported she had been bitten on the thumb by a cat during a medical procedure. Due to the cat’s condition the owner decided to have The Hope Center euthanize the cat. ACO Barker transported the cat to the Fairfax County Animal Shelter for rabies testing.
- Open Door 16-002149 100 Pleasant Street, NW March 18 11:04 a.m. Officers responding to the report of a residential alarm found the front door ajar. MPO Seitz and Ofc. Slebonick checked the residence and found nothing to be disturbed. The homeowner arrived on scene and stated that he may not have completely closed the door when he left earlier that morning.
- Juvenile Case 16-002153: 800 Block Maple Avenue, NE March 18 12:42 p.m. Sgt. Elias observed a vehicle traveling above the posted speed limit and conducted a traffic stop. Upon his interaction with the male juvenile driver he found that he had been reported as missing from Fairfax County. Sgt. Elias contacted the juvenile’s mother who responded to the scene and the juvenile was released to her custody.
- Grand Larceny 16-002214: 1400 Block Patrick Circle, SW Between March 18 at 5:00 p.m. and March 19 at 1:00 p.m. A resident reported someone entered his unlocked vehicle, which was parked in his driveway, and stole his laptop, a projector and his wallet.
- Welfare Check 16-002189: 300 Block Holmes Drive, NW March 19 12:12 a.m. A citizen requested a welfare check on her adult daughter. She believed her daughter may be in the company of a man she was previously involved with. Ofc. Herrera responded to the man’s residence and spoke to him, but the woman was not there. Ofc. Herrera suggested the citizen follow up with her local police department regarding a missing person’s report.
- Arrest – Driving While Intoxicated 16-002196: 900 Block Maple Avenue, East March 19 1:58 a.m. Ofc. Reedy observed a vehicle stopped in the roadway on Maple Avenue. The vehicle had partially run off the roadway and the engine was still running. Upon his interaction with the driver Ofc. Reedy determined that he may be impaired. After failing to complete a series of field sobriety tests he arrested the 50 year old man from Ley Street in New Haven, Connecticut for Driving While Intoxicated. He was transported to the Vienna Police station where he was given the opportunity to provide a sample of his breath for analysis. After failing to submit a sufficient breath sample he was transported to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center where he was charged with Driving While Intoxicated and Refusal to Submit to a Breath Test.
- Domestic Dispute 16-002238: Cedar Lane, SE March 20 10:02 a.m. A citizen reported that his friend was having a dispute with her ex-boyfriend. MPO Lose and MPO Seitz located the woman who advised that her ex-boyfriend, with whom she previously cohabitated with, would not allow her to retrieve her property and leave the apartment. The officers spoke to the ex-boyfriend who agreed to let the woman into the residence to retrieve her remaining property. The officers remained on scene to maintain the peace until the woman retrieved her property. She then left the area without further incident.
- Assault 16-002245: Locust Street at Park Terrace Court, SE March 20 2:48 p.m. MPO Lose was flagged down by a resident who advised that his ex-girlfriend was continuously harassing him. The woman stated that she had personal belongings in the ex-boyfriend’s apartment that she wanted to retrieve. As MPO Lose was advising the woman of the ramifications if she continued to harass her ex-boyfriend she became agitated and grabbed her ex-boyfriend’s shirt. The man refused to pursue charges, and after calming down the woman was allowed to leave the area without further incident.
- Found Property 16-002261: James Madison Shell 545 Maple Avenue, West March 21 between 7:45 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. An employee reported finding a wallet that was left at the gas station. The wallet will be held at the Vienna Police Station until the owner can retrieve it.
- Assist EMS 16-002263: Town Hall 127 Center Street, South March 21 8:10 a.m. Lt. Marsh observed a female lying on the sidewalk to the rear of Town Hall with a wheeled walker lying next to her. The female advised she was not injured, but could not get herself back up. Lt. Marsh summoned assistance from Fairfax County Rescue, who responded and assessed the female for injuries. After their evaluation Lt. Marsh assisted the woman into Town Hall to complete her business.
- Domestic Assault 16-002280: Oakmont Court, NE March 21 8:21 p.m. Ofc. Hylinski and MPO Vazquez responded to the report of a domestic assault. A resident reported being assaulted by his adult son after an argument. There were no injuries and the resident did not want to pursue charges against his son. The son was cooperative with the officers. He agreed to leave the home for a few days and stay with other relatives to resolve the situation.
- Fraud 16-002298: Bank of America 235 Maple Avenue, West March 22 12:53 pm. An employee reported that a black female attempted to cash a fraudulent check. The woman left the area before officers arrived. It was determined that the check had been stolen from a mailbox in Fairfax County the previous day. This case is being investigated.
- Fraud 16-002299: Capital One Bank 246 Maple Avenue, East March 22 1:05 p.m. An employee reported that a black female attempted to cash a fraudulent check. The female had left the area before officers arrived. It was determined that the check had been stolen from a mailbox in Fairfax County the previous day. This case is under investigation.
