Letter To The Editor: Getting Back On Track Will Take Leadership From School Board

In light of superintendent's retirement announcement, Hunter Mill School Board Candidate Nancy Linton says "new direction" means tearing down wall between board and community

To The Editor,

Dr. Dale seems to be trying to convince voters to err on the side of maintaining the status quo in the upcoming School Board elections.

He explained that he is holding off on his retirement so that he can keep everyone from going in “different directions at once, without focus.”  Perhaps this is because he recognizes that so many problems have emerged under his reign, and that new School Board members will have different ideas on where to start.  I agree that getting back on track will take real leadership--not from Dr. Dale, but from the School Board members themselves.

His point reinforces the need for voters to think hard before casting their ballots.  Does the candidate bring new ideas and a fresh perspective instead of the current approach that has overstressed teachers, alienated the community, and led to 49% of our schools falling short on Adequate Yearly Progress testing this year?  We need new school members who will not to relegate leadership to Dr. Dale but will take charge and make changes that voters are demanding.

I will ensure that the School Board re-establishes its position of leadership.  I promise to work closely with the other members to tear down the wall that currently exists between the School Board and the community by doing what I have done my entire career as a Licensed Professional Counselor : listen to parents, teachers and students, ask probing questions of the school system and establish action plans for change.  I will also apply proven business approaches for reducing administrative inefficiency.

I am confident that as a new School Board, we can quickly organize our focus.  Then we can concentrate on selecting a new superintendent that will build on this powerful, new direction that invites teachers, parents, and students to be a part of the team.  It is only by working as a team that we can inspire excellence in our students.
