Vienna Students Join First Lady's Attempt To Break Jumping Jacks World Record

Students at Green Hedges, St. Mark's schools host events for Michelle Obama's effort

As Michelle Obama kicked off her "Let's Jump" campaign to break the Guiness Record for most people doing jumping jacks in a 24-hour period on Tuesday, hundreds of pairs of feet in Vienna joined her.

The first lady kicked off the nation-wide initiative in a ceremony on the White House Lawn on Tuesday hoping to attract the more than 20,000 people she needed to break the record. Those people needed to jump for at least a minute between 3 p.m. Tuesday and 3 p.m. Wednesday.

Some of the thousands of children who participated were students at Green Hedges and St. Mark's Catholic School.

At Green Hedges, 97 sets of feet moved in sync Tuesday on the Green Hedges soccer field, jumping jacks for one minute as Mayor Jane Seeman served as an official witness.

And on Wednesday at St. Mark's Catholic School, 300 students and faculty jumped in their own event.

"The reason I decided to enter this was to raise awareness about childhood obesity ... having the student realize that they were participating in an event to break a World Record was very cool to them," said Terri Sanders, a PE teacher at the school. "The students really had a great time jumping for the minute."

Schools that followed the official Guiness Book Of World Record rules needed a certain number of official "witnesses" and volunteers. They'll submit their tallies to the organization, which will determine if Obama and the thousands of children across the country that pledged to join her have broken the record. It could take several months to see how they did, according to National Geographic Kids Magazine, which partnered with the first lady for the event.
