Warhawks Defeat Fairfax, Stay Perfect In Liberty District

Football squad moves to 5-0, 6-2 overall as it prepares to face co-division leader this week

Grant Hoffman had touchdown runs of 29 and 6 yards Friday to lead the James Madison Warhawks to a 17-7 victory over the Fairfax Rebels.

The win lifted Madison’s overall record to 6-2 and kept them perfect in the Liberty District at 5-0 and tied with the StoneBridge Bulldogs for the division lead.

The Warhawks were able to convert a Rebel fumble into a 42-yard field goal by Nick Dorka to take an early 3-0 lead. The Rebels responded with a 12-play drive deep into Madison territory, but Max Ehrsam knocked down a fourth down pass and the drive stalled.

Madison scored the only touchdown of the first half when its offensive line opened a big hole on the right side and Hoffman burst through for an impressive 29-yard run. Madison’s defense hung tough stopping another long Fairfax drive on fourth down and the Warhawks took a 10-0 lead into the half.

Neither team could generate much offense in the second half until Dan Powers hit Thomas Brooks with a 74-yard pass on third and long from their own 20-yard line. Powers rolled to his right and lofted a long pass toward the sideline at midfield. Brooks went up between two defenders, made the tough catch and carried the ball to the Rebels 6-yard line. Hoffman finished the drive with his second touchdown of the game to give the Warhawks a 17-0 lead late in the third quarter.

Fairfax mounted several impressive drives in the fourth quarter but the Madison defensive backfield, lead by Ehrsam, Salvatore Rahner and Walker McCandrew, shut down the Rebel passing game with tight coverage and timely hits. When the Rebels finally scored it was too little, too late.

Madison next game will be this Friday against the 7-1 Bulldogs at Stone Bridge High School.
