Update: All Outside Burning Temporarily Banned

Open air burning is restricted between 4 p.m. and midnight until April 30.

Update: Due to the weather conditions the Fire Marshal's Office is banning outside fires today through Saturday, Feb 19. The department said that outside fires that can spread quickly and out of control due the combination of wind and humidity.

Starting at 4 p.m. today, Virginia’s burn law goes into effect, which limits open air burning between 4 p.m. and midnight if the fire is within 300 feet of wood or dry grass.

The Prince William Department of Fire and Rescue advises that winds can be elevated at night and when the humidity is lower, fire can carry into woods. The ban applies to all open burning including campfires bigger that two feet by two feet.

A burn permit is required from the Prince William County Fire Marshal’s Office before burning.

“The permits are limited to commercial or agriculture operations and as part of the process a comprehensive review of the operation are conducted before a permit will be approved and issued,” said the department in a press release.
