Bonney Lake Mayor Steps Away from Civic Duties to Undergo Cancer Treatment

Tomorrow is a new day for Bonney Lake Mayor Neil Johnson – it is the day he will begin receiving stem cell treatments in his fight against Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (CML). While receiving treatments and during his recovery, Johnson will be on hiatus from his civic and professional duties.

Johnson checked in to his “country club” on Saturday – the University of Washington Medical Center. He has undergone another round of chemotherapy treatment over the weekend and will begin hematopoietic stem cell transplant therapy on Tuesday.

While he expects to be away from his day job at The Seattle Times for the next four months, he hopes to be back to city work by the end of September. In the interim, deputy mayor Dan Swatman will lead city meetings and Johnson will check in with City Administrator Don Morrison and keep up on city business through phone calls with city leaders and groups.
