Today, local Boy Scouts and members of the public began placing the flags at the markers of veterans in the Sumner City Cemetery.
It's part of the preparation for the city's Memorial Day ceremony later this month.
Sumner's VFW Post 3070 has been placing flags at the cemetery - which has veterans who have served in every war since the Civil War - since 1943.
Mayor Dave Enslow says that the group lost the man who was in charge most recently of placing the flags.
Jim Greenwood served in the Coast Guard and Air Force and was in both World War II and Korea, the mayor wrote in his update to the community.
"Sadly, we lost Jim this year and now add him to the list of veterans whom we remember," Enslow wrote.
Boy Scouts and members of the public have been helping with the flags. This year, members of the 593rd Sustainment Brigade plan to help place flags and with the ceremony itself.
"It's nice to see others carrying on the tradition," Enslow added.
The city's Memorial Day ceremony begins at 10 a.m.
