Building The Pierce County 2022-2023 Biennial Budget: Week 3 Summary

This week Council heard from the remaining county departments about their proposed budgets, budget requests and had the opportunity to ask questions of department directors and leaders. Topics included Finance and IT and a review of the Sheriffβs Department budget, including the Corrections Bureau.

The Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department also presented about its budget process and reviewed its requested funding.
At the end of the week Council reviewed ordinance 2021-102, which proposed a 15.5% fare increase in 2022 and 2023 for Pierce County ferry users. Council ultimately adopted an amendment to the proposal that reduced the fare increase from 15.5% to an amount that reflects the inflation that occurred since the last time ferry fares were adjusted, which was January 2016.

Next week marks the final week of Council discussion around building the budget. It is anticipated Council will hold its first reading of the proposed budget at its Nov. 16, 3 p.m. regular meeting. This will be the publicβs first opportunity to comment on the document. Final adoption is expected Nov. 23.
