Suicidal Man Killed by Police After Pointing Weapon at Officers Outside Sumner Home

A man was killed by police fire after he pointed a weapon at officers and did not respond to commands to put it down, according to Sumner Police.

The man has been identified as 46-year-old Patrick Durnford.

At 4:19 pm, the male, age 47, exited the residence and pointed a weapon at the officers of the Metro SWAT team. He would not respond to officers’ commands to put the weapon down. An officer used deadly force with a single shot.

The officer is reported to be a member of the Milton Police Department and METRO Swat Team, Sumner media spokeswoman Carmen Palmer reports. As standard procedure, the officer has been put on paid administrative leave while the investigation continues.

While the man initially reported to 9-11 that he had a hostage in the home with him, Sumner Police verified that he was alone and there were no other people involved.

At 2:53 pm, on October 24, 2012, a male called 911 threatening suicide.Β  Sumner Police responded to his residence in the 7000 block of 142nd Avenue E.Β  Also assisting are Bonney Lake and Puyallup police departments.Β  The male has locked himself in his residence, and there appear to be no hostages.Β  Metro SWAT is also being called out.Β  As part of this response, two units are positioned on SR 410, so drivers may call wondering about the activity.
