Sumner High Students Brighten Downtown Association Office with Scenes of Mt. Rainier, Rhubarb Pie
Sumner High School students Karen Fierro and Olivia Durham designed and painted a mural for the Downtown Association that represents the town's favorite things -- Valley landscapes and rhubarb pie.
Capturing Sumnerβs idyllic identity in a painting isnβt easy, but for two Sumner High School students, it was effortless.
SHS juniors Karen Fierro and Olivia Durham were selected to paint a bright mural in the Sumner Downtown Association office that represents the townβs heritage.
SDA program manager Laurie Miller thought the office's blank wall needed a brighter touch and permanent reminder of what Sumner is all about. She put the idea of a mural to the SHS student body and solicited submission ideas.

Out of all the submissions, Fierro and Durhamβs designs stood out. The two girls opted to work together and the final result is exactly what SDA was looking for.
βThe rhubarb pie in the window was a concept to which we took an immediate liking,β said Miller. βAnd, of course, who wouldnβt want Mt. Rainier and daffodils as part of this mural? So, by creating a windowsill with a cooling pie and a beautiful field of daffodils in the background being guarded by our majestic mountainβ¦ well, we could only imagine the mural they could create together.β
