Gig Harbor is a place like no other. And whether you grew up here, recently moved to the area or you’re just an occasional visitor, you know that Gig Harbor has its own special traditions and history that make it so unique.
A few things to know:
- Gig Harbor, discovered in 1840 and incorporated in 1946, is a picturesque small city named after the Wilkes Expedition's longboat, "captain's gig.” Located on Gig Harbor Bay in Puget Sound, it is considered "the gateway to the Olympic Peninsula" and has become a popular tourist destination due to its access to state and city parks, historic waterfront, boutiques and fine dining.
- While Gig Harbor is known for its picturesque waterfront and marinas, it's also home to the Harbor History Museum, which showcases the city's rich maritime history. From traditional fishing methods to the lumber industry, you'll learn about the fascinating stories that shaped Gig Harbor.
- For a unique outdoor activity, head to Kopachuck State Park, where you can explore the beach and hike through the lush forest. Don't miss the opportunity to take in the stunning views of the Puget Sound and the Olympic Mountains.

- Gig Harbor is home to one of the oldest continuously operated movie theaters in the country. The Galaxy Theater, which first opened its doors in 1919, offers a unique movie-going experience with its historic charm and modern amenities.
- For a glimpse into the city's agricultural heritage, check out the Waterfront Farmers Market. Held on Thursdays from June through September, this market features local vendors selling fresh produce, flowers, artisanal goods and more.
- For a fun outdoor activity that the whole family can enjoy, visit the Skansie Brothers Park. This scenic park offers a playground, picnic areas and a waterfront boardwalk where you can take a stroll and enjoy the beautiful views. - If you're a fan of hiking, head to the Cushman Trail. This 6.2-mile trail winds through the scenic woods and offers beautiful views of the city and surrounding areas.
- Gig Harbor is home to several art galleries, including the Ebb Tide Gallery. The gallery showcases the work of local artists and offers a variety of art styles, from traditional to contemporary.
- For a unique shopping experience, head to the Gig Harbor Waterfront. This area is home to a variety of specialty shops, from boutiques to gift shops, where you can find one-of-a-kind treasures and souvenirs.
