Happy Mother's Day!

The second Sunday of this month, May 8, is Mother's Day.

Happy Mother's Day, the day we set aside on the second Sunday every May to recognize and honor motherhood.

Mother's Day is celebrated internationally, but the U.S. version got its start thanks to West Virginian Anna Jarvis. According to several historical accounts, she was inspired by her own mother's wish to dedicate a day to recognize mothers. Mother's Day was recognized nationally by proclamation in 1914 President Woodrow Wilson, whom Jarvis reportedly met while studying at a nearby women's seminary school and maintained a lifelong correspondence.

Originally intended to be a day of intimacy of children and their mothers, a modern Mother's Day is also often celebrated with gifts of flowers or a large family outing at a nearby restaurant or park.
