Here's How To Plant A Tree For Free In Kirkland
Building on its tree rebate program, Kirkland now offers neighbors pre-paid certificates of up to $500 to encourage new planting.
KIRKLAND, WA โ Kirkland households are now eligible for pre-paid certificates to help pay for planting new trees, building on the city's existing tree rebate program. In January, the city announced its tree-planting incentives would continue through 2022, including rebates of up to $500 for property owners who planted from a list of approved trees.
The goal is to help Kirkland grow its tree canopy, increase shade, help prevent neighborhood flooding, and improve absorption of rainwater runoff.
This month, city officials announced the program would also support pre-paid certificates, which can be obtained after completing a few simple steps.

To be eligible, homeowners must first take and pass an online tree-planting course before purchasing a new tree. Next, they can visit a participating nursery to learn what kind of trees will best flourish on their property and note down the specifics. That information will help in filling out an online application for the tree certificate, which should include the common and scientific name of the tree and the total estimated cost of materials.
If approved, the city will send a certificate for the specific amount requested and mail it within two weeks. The certificate can be brought back to the nursery to be redeemed.
