Kirkland Adds Longtime Resident To The Plaza Of Champions
Wesley "Wes" Robert Carpenter is a third-generation Kirkland resident and a decorated war veteran.

KIRKLAND, WA โ Longtime Kirkland resident Wesley "Wes" Carpenter is now in rare company, having been inducted into the city's Plaza of Champions this month. The third-generation Kirkland resident and decorated Vietnam veteran was honored by friends, family and city officials during a ceremony last weekend, becoming just the 24th neighbor to receive the distinction.
The Plaza of Champions, located at Marina Park, was established in 1988 to honor the people and groups whose achievements have left a lasting impact on the community. Carpenter was born in Kirkland in 1943 and attended Rose Hill Elementary, Kirkland Junior High and Lake Washington High School.
In a news release Wednesday, the city recognized Carpenter's military service, which began at 21 years old in 1966 when he was drafted into the Vietnam War. Officials said Carpenter went on to receive a Bronze Star, a Purple Heart, and an Army Commendation Medal for heroism.

"It was a tremendous honor to gather with friends and neighbors to celebrate Wes at Saturday's induction ceremony," said Kirkland City Councilmember Toby Nixon. "I deeply respect the service and sacrifice of those who serve in the military, and their families, and am grateful to have been able to help formally recognize Wes for his selfless devotion to Kirkland and beyond."
Even before his military service, officials said Carpenter showed bravery when he attempted to stop a robbery at a Houghton gas station. He went on to coach little league and the Senior Kirkland Babe Ruth Team, and served as president of the Chinook League, the city said.

Shelli Craig, Carpenter's daughter, and a long-time city employee, led the effort for his nomination to the Plaza of Champions beginning last year. Officials said each nomination must clear a "stringent eligibility review," with approvals needed from both the City Council and the city's Park Board. Carpenter is the first name added to the plaza in four years.
