Kirkland Businesses May Re-Open But Remain Vigilant

KIRKLAND, Wash. – The City of Kirkland is advising that businesses authorized to open under Phase 1 of Governor Inslee’s Safe Start proclamation may do so, but to remain vigilant for any potential criminal activity.“We want to thank the business community for closing yesterday and today as a precaution to prevent looting and property damage. We are not aware of any immediate threat of criminal activity in Kirkland and Phase 1 businesses may reopen,” said City Manager Kurt Triplett.

However, businesses are being asked to keep a watch out for criminal activity and to continue to monitor the City website and communication channels if the situation changes.

“Because looting and acts of violence continue to occur in other parts of the region, it’s important that businesses and community members continue to monitor City communications channels for updates,” said Chief Cherie Harris. “Community members can report criminal activity to 911, but please note that peaceful protesting is not criminal activity and should not be reported to 911.”

Please remember that King County is still in Phase 1 of Governor Inslee’s Safe Start proclamation. Community members are still being asked to limit travel to essential and permitted activities. Retail remains limited to curbside pick-up only.

The City and its Police and Fire Departments are monitoring the regional situation very closely and are in communication with other local, state and federal law enforcement and fire agencies. This is a very fluid situation and the City recognizes that businesses may be asked to take action at any time over the next week. Ongoing updates will be made on the City’s website and social media accounts.
