KIRKLAND, WA โ€” Kirkland city leaders gathered Thursday to cut the ribbon at Fire Station 24, the city's newest fire station, located just north of Juanita Elementary School along Northeast 132nd Street. The station will help improve emergency services in the Finn Hill and North Juanita neighborhoods, and crews will begin working out of the new facility on Jan. 5, 2022.

"As a city, our goal is to protect our community and to protect those who risk it all to keep us safe," said Kirkland Mayor Penny Sweet. "We could not be doing this without the support of our communities and the sacrifice of our emergency responders."

The new Fire Station 24 is equipped with several modern improvements, including airlocks, a decontamination bay, and seismic upgrades to ensure the building can withstand a major earthquake.

"The station is designed to protect the health of those who are responding and to empower them to be even more efficient than they already are," said Kirkland City Councilmember Toby Nixon. "It provides quick access to the apparatus bay from every location within the station. Responding to the lessons learned with the COVID-19 early pandemic response, it also provides a decontamination room with exterior access. And it's designed to be operational even after a significant earthquake, so our firefighters can get out of the station and respond when the community needs them most.

The city is preparing to begin work on another new fire station in 2022, with plans to demolish a building near Hazen Hills Park and replace it with Fire Station 27, serving Totem Lake. Renovations are also slated to begin next year on Fire Station 22, followed by Fire Station 21 in Forbes Creek and Fire Sation 26 in North Rose Hill.
